The Marble Falls High School powerlifting program has two meets this week that will determine what happens next.

Lady Mustangs Caydence Bielfeldt, Montserrat Fregoso, Makenzie Long and Alexis Sprott will compete in the Region II, Division II Regional Meet at Friday, Feb. 27, at Dublin High School.

Long is in the 114-pound weight division, Bielfeldt in the 132-pound weight division, Sprott in the 148-pound weight division, and Fregoso in the 242-pound weight.

Bielfeldt and Fregoso are returning to regionals, while Sprott recently joined the team.

“(Sprott) did really well at (the Aggie Showdown Feb. 14),” head coach Karl “Beef” Bielfeldt said.

Her performance at that meet ranked her 14th in the region.

Caydence Bielfeldt is ranked No. 8 in the region in her weight division, while Fregoso is ranked No. 10 in hers.

The goal is to finish in the top two at regionals or hit a qualifying total to advance to the state meet, which is March 18-21 at Edinburg.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs will head to Buda Johnson for a last chance qualifying meet Saturday, Feb. 28. The coach noted several are “sitting comfortably” in regional rankings.

They are Tyler McIntyre, who is ranked No. 2 in the 114-pound weight class, David Dominguez, who is ranked No. 1 in both the 123-pound and the 148-pound weight classes, Daniel Dominguez, who is ranked No. 2 in the 132-pound weight class, Josue Fonsecua, who is ranked No. 3 in the 165-pound weight class, Keaton Proctor, who is ranked No. 8 in the 275-pound weight class and No. 9 in the 242-pound weight class, and Jaxson Bales, who is ranked No. 7 in the super heavy weight class,

“Everybody is kind of in the middle of the pack,” Karl Bielfeldt said.

One Mustang, Arnulfo Salazar, is ranked No. 1 in both the 181-pound weight class and 198-pound weight class. He is not expected to compete at the Buda meet.

The advantage of being ranked in two weight classes is athletes have options on which division to compete.

He noted the Mustangs spent the last two weeks preparing for the last chance meet to ensure they positioned themselves to be ranked high enough to advance to the regional meet, which is March 14 in Gatesville.

“What happened is what I expected,” he said. “We had some newcomers who added to the team dynamic. They put themselves in a position really to help themselves at regionals. I’m expecting 10 or so to go to regionals. Half of those should make it to state. That’s an increase over last year’s three. I’m hoping to take five or six this year.”
